Title: Preseason Football Takeaways: Rookie Quarterbacks Shine, Established Backups Struggle

Preseason football games provide a glimpse into the upcoming NFL season and serve as an opportunity for players to showcase their skills. While it may be challenging to evaluate performances accurately, several takeaways emerged from recent matchups.

One standout player was Dorian Thompson-Robinson, a fifth-round rookie quarterback for the Cleveland Browns. Thompson-Robinson impressed fans and analysts alike with his dual-threat abilities, exhibiting both his passing and rushing skills on the field.

The New England Patriots’ preseason game against the Texans saw rookie quarterback Mac Jones sitting out. Nonetheless, backup quarterbacks Bailey Zappe and undrafted rookie Malik Cunningham stole the spotlight with impressive performances that caught the attention of viewers.

In a preseason game between the Saints and the Chiefs, fans were encouraged by the connection between Derek Carr and star players Alvin Kamara and Michael Thomas. With Carr leading the offense, the Saints exhibited promising potential for the upcoming season.

On the other hand, Buccaneers’ backup quarterback Kyle Trask struggled in his first audition for Tom Brady’s old job, while the Cleveland Browns’ starting quarterback Baker Mayfield excelled, leaving fans divided on Trask’s abilities.

Chicago Bears quarterback Justin Fields made a brief appearance in the preseason and showed promise. Benefitting from a retooled offense and strong support from D.J. Moore and Khalil Herbert, Fields displayed his potential as a key player for the Bears.

Several established backup quarterbacks had a tough time fending off competition from lower down the depth chart. Nate Sudfeld, Marcus Mariota, and Brian Hoyer faced challenges and struggled to deliver standout performances, making it clear that their positions may not be secure.

Meanwhile, young wide receivers Richie James, Jordan Addison, and Tank Dell seized the opportunity to shine in the preseason games, giving glimpses of their potential impact on their respective teams in the upcoming season.

However, high first-round quarterbacks like Bryce Young, C.J. Stroud, Anthony Richardson, and Will Levis had rough outings in their first exhibition games. These performances highlighted the learning curve they face as they transition from college to the professional level.

Special teams issues plagued the San Francisco 49ers, with rookie kicker Jake Moody missing field goals. This showcased an area that needs improvement before the regular season begins.

In a notable comeback, former first-round quarterback Josh Rosen returned to game action for the first time since 2022. However, Rosen had mixed results, with missed opportunities and sacks, emphasizing the need for further development.

Furthermore, both Rosen and Sam Darnold were outperformed by Raiders rookie Aidan O’Connell, highlighting the need for improvement in the 49ers’ quarterback room.

Overall, preseason football allowed several players to make their mark, both positively and negatively. As the regular season approaches, coaches and fans will be closely watching these players’ progress and how their performances will shape their respective teams’ fortunes in the NFL.
