Samsung’s SmartThings platform has undergone significant transformations, positioning itself as a powerful smart home platform with Samsung devices at its core. This evolution has now allowed SmartThings to support wider industry protocols like Matter, giving users the freedom to choose from a vast array of smart devices to enhance their setup.

To further enhance the user experience, Samsung has collaborated with the Home Connectivity Alliance, providing users with greater control over their smart home devices. Additionally, the introduction of Hub Everywhere brings hub capabilities to Samsung’s consumer electronics devices, while ensuring seamless integration with the platform.

During the Samsung Developers Conference 2023, an exciting announcement was made. Sound bars by Samsung will now function as hubs, enabling multi-hub smart homes with expanded coverage and reliability. This innovation showcases Samsung’s commitment to delivering cutting-edge solutions that cater to consumers’ needs.

Responding to user requests, SmartThings also introduced the Easy Hub replacement feature. This addition allows for simpler and more convenient hub upgrades, ensuring a hassle-free user experience.

On the software front, SmartThings offers a new Software Development Kit (SDK) and enhanced API for partners, enabling them to extract maximum value from the platform and incorporate SmartThings Home AI into their own applications. The introduction of the Context API, a machine learning engine, further enhances the intelligence of smart home solutions by utilizing available data.

A significant milestone for SmartThings is the growth of the SmartThings Find network, which currently boasts over 300 million Find Nodes. Building this network came with its challenges, with the team having to overcome obstacles like optimizing battery life and managing a distributed system with millions of active nodes.

Despite being tightly integrated with the Samsung ecosystem, it is worth noting that there have been no discussions about integrating SmartThings Find within core Android.

To improve accessibility and visual appeal, SmartThings has developed the Map Full View feature, aligning with its vision to democratize the smart home. This feature offers a comprehensive view of the smart home setup, making it easier for users to navigate and interact with their devices.

The popular Galaxy SmartTag2 has recently undergone a design change based on customer feedback. The new design makes it smaller, easier to hang, and more water-resistant, ensuring its durability in various environments. Furthermore, Samsung has explored potential business applications for the SmartTag, particularly in the logistics operations industry, where a proof of concept has already been conducted with a partner.

One of SmartThings’ successful endeavors is the SmartThings Station, which has been launched in the United States and South Korea. This all-in-one device has received positive feedback for its integrated button and wireless charging functionality, enhancing convenience for users.

SmartThings has prioritized supporting protocols such as Thread and Wi-Fi through Matter, and while it focuses on these technologies, there are currently no plans to support Z-Wave on the hardware.

As SmartThings continues to innovate and expand its product offerings, it remains a leading player in the smart home industry, providing users with a seamless and comprehensive smart home experience.
