A Boeing 737 aircraft carrying 85 people caught fire and skidded off the runway at Senegal’s main airport, resulting in injuries to 10 individuals, including the pilot. The Air Sénégal flight, which was operated by TransAir and bound for Bamako, Mali, faced a terrifying ordeal at Blaise Diagne International airport.
Passengers onboard the aircraft were forced to evacuate as flames engulfed one side of the plane, with some describing the situation as causing “complete panic.” The injured individuals are currently receiving treatment at a local hospital, as authorities work to determine the cause of the accident.
This recent incident marks the third involving a Boeing airplane this week, following a similar event in Turkey where 190 passengers were safely evacuated from a plane. Boeing, already under scrutiny due to previous crashes involving the Boeing 737 Max jets that resulted in 346 fatalities, continues to face intense pressure.
A Boeing whistleblower recently testified at a congressional hearing regarding manufacturing shortcuts that could potentially lead to issues with aircraft safety. The plane involved in the Senegal crash has been identified as a Boeing 737-38J, which was delivered in the 1990s, according to the Aviation Safety Network.
As investigations continue into the cause of the accident, passengers and aviation authorities are left grappling with the implications of yet another troubling incident involving a Boeing aircraft.
