Bangladesh Captain Denies Intentional Wide Ball to Deny Kohli Century
Bangladesh’s stand-in captain, Najmul Hossain Shanto, has dismissed allegations that spinner Nasum Ahmed intentionally bowled a wide ball to deny Indian captain Virat Kohli a century in their recent World Cup clash.
During the match, Kohli was batting on 97 with nine overs left and India needing just two more runs to secure victory when Ahmed bowled a delivery down the leg side. Surprisingly, the umpire did not adjudicate it as a wide ball, which raised suspicions among some fans and experts.
However, Kohli went on to hit a six in the 42nd over, finishing the game with a century and securing India’s win.
Seeking to clear the air, Shanto defended Ahmed, stating that there was no plan to intentionally bowl a wide ball and that their intention was to play a “proper game” against India.
Expressing his disappointment, Shanto also highlighted the performance of Bangladesh’s openers, Tanzid Hasan and Litton Das. The duo failed to capitalize on their starts and score big runs, which ultimately impacted the team’s chances of success.
However, Shanto defended the team’s preparations against the formidable Indian side, asserting that the top-order batsmen performed admirably in the game.
The availability of regular captain Shakib Al Hasan remains uncertain. Shanto expressed hope that Shakib will return to the team soon but provided no official update on his status.
Meanwhile, Tanzid, who was Bangladesh’s standout batter in the match, expressed satisfaction with his maiden ODI fifty. However, he acknowledged that his personal milestone was overshadowed by the team’s failure to win.
Determined to improve, Tanzid expressed his commitment to working on his shortcomings and contributing more to the team’s victories in upcoming matches.
As Bangladesh continues their World Cup campaign, fans eagerly await the return of Shakib Al Hasan and hope to see improved performances from the team’s openers to ensure success in future matches.
